Houston International Quilt Market 2011

Sunday, November 6th, 2011

Last weekend I attended the Houston International Quilt Market.

It always wonderful to peruse the vendor booths to see what’s new and exciting.

But my favorite part is always the QUILTS!  I snapped so many pictures of quilts to share and I thought I’d done a good job of including pics of the documentation of each quilt so I could properly attribute it’s maker. Unfortunately, several of the documentation shots did not come out clearly enough to read.  I must have been trembling with excitement when I shot those.  Sigh…  So I won’t be posting those pics until I can do the research and discovery of the makers.

Here are a few of my favorites that I can share:

Windblown by Maria Elkins

Windblown by Maria Elkins

The documentation on Windblown by Maria Elkins is too fuzzy to be worth posting…and the bottom of it got cut off.  Here is what I can read:

This quilt is inspired by a dear friend who has stood firm and remained joyful despite the various challenges she has had to face in her young life. As the quilt developed I decided to combine her beautiful image with a traditional quilt block — Windblown Star — and wind like feathers.  Techniques: Hand drawn, hand painted, embellished, machine quilted.

The IQA Houston 2009 winners have been posted at:

http://www.quilts.org/winners.html

Congratulations to all the winners!!! I was very excited to see so many names I recognize (too many to list them all here).  Two names I was especially happy to see were Karen Eckmeier (aka the Quilted Lizard) and Gloria Hansen (author of Digital Essentials book and much more!).

Karen won 2nd place in the Innovative Pieced category sponsored by Omnigrid for her quilt, My Stash At 50 (aka Log Cabin with an Attitude).

Gloria won 3rd place for Circles Collide and Honorable Mention for Whitley Decay in the Digital Imagery category sponsored by C & T Publishing.   If you’re interested in learning more about digital imagery in quilts, you’ll want to make sure you check out her Digital Essentials book.

Catching up with Jake Finch at Houston Quilt Market!

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

One of the brightest highlights of my trip to Houston this year was that I finally had an opportunity to meet Jake Finch in person. We’ve shared several emails over the years, but that’s never as much fun as meeting someone so talented in person.

Jake is a genuinely kind, delightful and beautiful person; not only that, she is an extremely talented lady.

SewThankful has stocked her book Fast, Fun and Easy Book Cover Art since May 2007 when it first was introduced…it’s STILL a huge hit today!

Earlier this year Jake had a new book release, Comfort Quilts from the Heart, which is also tremendously popular.

If you click on the picture to the left, you’ll notice the green ribbon Jake is wearing says, “MEDIA”.  That’s because Jake recently became the Managing Editor of Mark Lipinski’s Quilter’s Home Magazine (a CK Media, LLC publication).  I am so thrilled for Jake & know she will do amazing things for Quilter’s Home Magazine. Many CONGRATULATIONS Jake! Keep up the awesome work.  You inspire so many of us.
