Knee/ACL Status Update – 5 weeks post-op

5 weeks post-op -- 5 incisions healing very nicely

In the last couple of weeks I’ve received several inquiries about the status of my knee/ACL reconstruction surgery and recovery.  Here’s a quick summary:

When I saw my surgeon on Tuesday for the 5 week follow up, he was extremely pleased with my progress.

He released from Physical Therapy after completing just 4 weeks.  I can achieve a greater than 120 degree bend in the knee.  I can fully straighten the knee.  I have been walking crutch free for 3 weeks.  I have been back to my spin (indoor cycling) classes for a little over 2 weeks. I’ve been back in the pool, swimming freestyle with no kick (using a pull buoy to immobilize the legs).  I can go up and down stairs (relatively) normally alternating feet in the stepping motion.  I still go slowly on the stairs–especially coming down–but every day is getting better.

I still have a some swelling, but it is going down little by little every day; although, it does flair back up when I have been on my feet too long.

Things I am not allowed to do: NO running, twisting or lateral (i.e., shuffling or sliding sideways) movements for another 3 – 6 months.

My surgeon has given me the go ahead to get on my road bike whenever I am ready (no clipping in tho’ — have to use plain/open pedals).  If the weather stays nice, I will give it a try tomorrow.  YAY!!!!  Oh yeah, I am excited.  And a little nervous.

Thanks so much everybody for caring and for your support over the last few months.  It really means a lot to me.  HUGS!!!

want to say THANKS for the ice pack cover!!!! The covers will be so much nicer than wrapping in a towel. Will also make the ice packs, sounds like those will work better than ice cubes in a bag!!!! Will be making them to use when I have knee replacement surgery next month…have had both knees scoped but now need one replaced… Will try to post pics when I get the covers made…..Priscilla

    Hi There Tracy,
Good job! Sounds like you’re making great progress! That’s wonderful news!

Above all else, patience is your friend. Do be patient with yourself while you’re healing. Here’s something I learned from my PT that’s very important while you’re healing…….in everything you do,

“Let your toes follow your nose!”

Make sure you’re fully facing the direction you want to go. If you think about it, most of the time, our heads turn toward the direction we want to go, but we begin moving before our body is squarely facing that direction. When that happens, there go our knees! They twist, and if you’re post-op, you’ve just injured yourself! Been there, done that…unfortunately, more than once! lol If you get in the habit of doing this, your knees will love you for it! So happy you’re making such great progress…good girl, keep up the good work!

    Happy Healing,
    Ludi 🙂

    Hi Tracy,
Glad to hear you’re well unto recovery. Please be cautious as a twist or fall may cause more problems. Our weather here in the panhandle of Fl. was the same this morning. Cool but it is nice and warm right now. We’re enjoying and afternoon watching the Thunderbirds (Air Force) fly team today even though the polen is bad and my allergies are acting up.
Wrote more than expect. Take care and have a nice week.
